The Muppets Mayhem Trailer Promises Music and…Well, Mayhem on Disney+ This May

The Muppets are back and ready to rock in the first teaser for The Muppets Mayhem, coming to Disney+ this May. Having been announced earlier in the year, the latest series from The Muppets centers on the iconic house band The Electric Mayhem, made up of Dr Teeth, Animal, Floyd, Janice, Zoot and Lips, as they head off on “an epic, music-filled journey to record their first-ever studio album. Check out the teaser below.

The Muppets Mayhem stars Lilly Singh as Nora, Tahj Mowry as Moog, Saara Chaudry as Hannah, Bill Barretta as Dr. Teeth, Dave Goelz as Zoot, Eric Jacobson as Animal, Peter Linz as Lips, David Rudman as Janice, Matt Vogel as Floyd Pepper and recurring guest star Anders Holm as JJ. The Muppets have gone through some rough times in recent years, struggling to find the magic and anarchic quality that made them so popular under the guidance of Jim Henson. However, as a Disney property, the Muppets have become more sanitized and in the process lost a big part of their original chaotic charm. Recently, they seem to have been recapturing a little of the magic and that looks to be continuing in The Muppets Mayhem.

The biggest mistake that has been made with The Muppets in recent years is to be too safe. The Muppets and Muppets Most Wanted were decent enough entries into the franchise, but for long term fans of the puppet characters, there were a lot of missed opportunities. In addition to this, an attempt to update The Muppets in a parody of “The Office” also failed to quite ignite the fires, but last year’s The Muppets Haunted Mansion proved to be a welcome entry, with the characters being joined by a host of big name stars in a story set around the famous Disney park ride.

This time around, the Electric Mayhem get to be the focus of the series for the first time in a long while, and that can only be a good thing. According to puppeteer and voice actor Bill Barretta, who has been a longstanding member of the Muppet team for the last three decades, explained previously how the Electric Mayhem series came around. He said:

“It was unbelievable, it was … one of the most amazing experiences I’ve had with the Muppets. There was something like 30,000 people that came to the park. I thought, ‘Well, there’s something there.’ What if this band went on the road? What if the band went on tour? And so, I started developing an idea for a show about the band because we don’t know that much about them.”

The Muppets Mayhem will premiere on Disney+ on May 10.
