The View Sparks Criticism by Dressing Up Child as Will Smith’s Oscars Slap

The View may have pushed it in the opinion of many viewers who were watching the daytime talk show on Halloween. In honor of the spooky holiday, the hosts of the program presented a segment with children dressed up as costumes representing some of the year’s biggest headlines. Some ideas included costumes for the raid on Mar-a-Lago, the discontinuation of the Choco Taco, Dr. Oz buying vegetables, and the leaked images of Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling from the set of the Barbie movie.

But it was the final costume shown that sparked some criticism from viewers. After mentioning the infamous incident that happened at the Academy Awards when Will Smith smacked Chris Rock, a child was brought in dressed up in gold to resemble an Oscar. A red handprint was also affixed to the child’s face to represent the slap across the face that Smith had given Rock. Perhaps they had predicted that there might be some complaints about the costume as it was made clear that they’re not condoning what happened.

“Now, we do not want to endorse violence of any kind, but we could not help but talk about one of the hottest hot topics this year,” wardrobe supervisor Ashley Alderfer-Kaufman said when presenting the costume. “So, we have our interpretation. We have an Oscars statue, we call this the Oscars slap.”

Is an Oscars Slap Costume Inappropriate?

The “Oscars Slap” costume was not funny according to some viewers who posted about the segment on social media. One person noted on Twitter, “Difficult to keep up with everything but the red handprint on one’s face is the symbol for missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls. Too bad no one was able to flag this costume idea in advance.”

“The Oscar Slap for a hot topic for Halloween on the view? Next time just pass on this suggestion! Otherwise great Halloween costumes!” another tweet reads.

“Bad taste on the Oscar slap,” writes another viewer in a series of tweets, rejecting the notion that the slap isn’t endorsed by the costume. “You did validate violence Ashly. Of course you would celebrate black on black Violence. Great Job Ashley. There were alot of hot topics and a violent one was your only Choice Ashley.. Wow thank God you didn’t pick the other horrific crims against black Americans.”

As a result of the Oscars incident, Will Smith has been banned from Academy events for the next decade. He has also resigned as a member of the Academy. The actor offered an open apology to Chris Rock in a video posted online, though the two have not yet met and spoken about the situation personally. However, Rock has sometimes joked about it in his stand-up act.
