The movie industry seems gripped by a fever: a rush to transform iconic video game titles into blockbuster movie adaptations. With hits like The Last of Us and The Super Mario Bros. Movie already generating buzz, audiences are eagerly anticipating the release of the adaptation of the cult PlayStation classic, Twisted Metal. Gran Turismo is also expected to rev up the engines in August, but presently, all spotlights are trained on Twisted Metal, a game cherished by many for its unique blend of exaggerated characters, breathtaking action, and a tone that’s challenging to encapsulate.

The leading star of Twisted Metal, Stephanie Beatriz, recently sat down for a candid chat with ComicBook. Her character, Quiet, endures a series of grueling challenges in the film — from simulated waterboarding to branding and more. The point, of course, is not to subject actors to real trauma, but to craft a palpable sense of menace and danger that captivates the viewer. But Beatriz unveiled an unexpected layer of difficulty she faced while shooting these scenes. The primary challenge wasn’t the intricacy of stunts or the psychological demand of the scenes, but the scorching Louisiana heat. Beatriz shared,

“Anything that we shot that was outside was particularly brutal, only because it was about 104 degrees on average every day in New Orleans. So, if you can imagine that costume in 104 degrees… not great! In of itself, that was its own form of torture.”

Beatriz recalls the punishing experience shooting outdoors, largely due to the oppressive heat. With daily temperatures averaging a sweltering 104 degrees in New Orleans, it’s hardly surprising that Beatriz likened her filming experience, particularly in her costume, to a form of torture. The sweltering heat is not just a test of endurance but often makes elaborate action sequences and prolonged shoots even more challenging.

It’s intriguing how, in the grand arena of blockbuster filmmaking, with its dazzling CGI, meticulously choreographed action sequences, and expansive set designs, something as mundane as weather can become a significant hurdle. The movie industry is no stranger to these adversities. Many large-scale, costume-intensive films often involve outdoor shoots in cities notorious for their heat, like New Orleans or Atlanta. What viewers might perceive as a mere backdrop can often turn out to be an actor’s most formidable antagonist, pushing their endurance and commitment to the craft.

As audiences gear up to be taken on an adrenaline-charged journey with Twisted Metal, it’s worth sparing a thought for the dedication and resilience of stars like Stephanie Beatriz. They face not just the fictitious challenges scripted for them, but also the very real tribulations presented by the elements. Beatriz’s revelations provide a glimpse into the behind-the-scenes world of filmmaking, where sometimes the most straightforward aspects can present the most significant challenges.

Based on the video game franchise of the same name, Twisted Metal stars Anthony Mackie, Thomas Haden Church, Will Arnett, Richard Cabral and Samoa Joe alongside Stephanie Beatriz, and is scheduled to premiere on Peacock on July 27, 2023.
