The Empress is a German period drama created by Katharina Eyssen and set against the backdrop of the Austrian Empire during the 1850s. Based on a true story, it follows Elisabeth “Sisi” von Wittelsbach (Devrim Lingnau) as she marries Emperor Franz Joseph (Philip Froissant) and becomes Empress of Austria. Constance “Connie” Reid (Emma Corrin) marries baronet Sir Clifford Chatterley (Matthew Duckett) shortly before Clifford goes off to fight in World War I. When he returns, their relationship grows strained and distanced. Eventually, Connie begins an affair with Oliver Mellors (Jack O’Connell), a gamekeeper on her husband’s estate.
A Sex-Charged Affair
Lady Chatterley’s Lover takes place a century after Bridgerton, but what it lacks in colorful luxury it makes up for with sex appeal. Even as a novel in the 1930s, Lady Chatterley’s Lover was scandalous for its time. This screen adaptation is just as racy, with Peter Bradshaw for The Guardian noting that the film is “never shy of eroticism and full-on sex.”

‘Pride and Prejudice’ (2007)
Pride and Prejudice is a Regency-era British romance based on Jane Austen’s beloved novel of the same name. Directed by Joe Wright (Atonement), the film stars Keira Knightley (Black Doves) in an Academy Award-nominated performance as the iconic Elizabeth Bennet opposite Matthew Macfadyen’s (Succession) brooding Mr. Darcy. The movie is rated PG, so viewers shouldn’t expect a steamy romance, though there is a legendary hand flex that continues to make audiences swoon today.

THe first season only has eight episodes and while Netflix has yet to announce a second season, viewers are hopeful that the show will continue.

Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story is a limited series created by Shonda Rhimes. The six-episode drama looks back at Queen Charlotte’s early marriage to King George in 1761. Bridgerton’s Golda Rosheuvel and Adjoa Andoh appear as adult versions of Queen Charlotte and Lady Agatha Danbury, but the story focuses on young Charlotte (played by India Amarteifio), her romance with King George (Corey Mylchreest), and her burgeoning friendship with the recently widowed Agatha Danbury (played by Arsema Thomas).

There’s nothing more suited to Bridgerton fans on Netflix than a story that takes place inside the Bridgerton universe.
