The closer we get to the end, the more I wish Brilliant Minds could somehow get a third season.
Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 18 featured one of the most interesting cases yet, explored one of the most difficult aspects of re-entering regular life after receiving inpatient mental health treatment, and set up an exciting new storyline… just as the season and series are about to draw to a close.
We even got a Blue Bloods-like dinner scene and some cute Nichols/Wolf moments, making the series’ looming ending even more painful.

Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 18 Turned a Hostage Situation In An Unpredictable Direction
It’s no secret how much I hate hostage storylines involving medical personnel. I complain about them every time they pop up on these medical dramas.
Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 18 included what looked like yet another one of these hostage situations, but, thankfully, it took a turn that was far more original than usual.
Instead of a 45-minute episode focused on the battle between a doctor who wants to save the perpetrator’s life and police who want to shoot to kill, the hostage situation here was short-lived and was only the catalyst for Wolf proving he is still incredibly competent after his stay at Hudson Oaks.
Wolf’s recent mental health struggles were an asset that allowed him to empathize with Alyssa and develop rapport before an overzealous cop shot her in the middle of Wolf’s attempt to de-escalate things.

We hadn’t even gotten to the point where Wolf tried to convince her to let the hostages go, for goodness sake!
Although this part of the story was as annoyingly unrealistic as all medical hostage situations, it was short-lived, and it allowed Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 18 to move the usual tropes to the hospital.
The cops were annoyed that they couldn’t just barge in and arrest the suspect and that her cuffs had to be removed so that doctors could save her life, but this didn’t take up much time during the episode.
If anything, it could have taken up more. The cops grumbled about being closed out, but then they… disappeared.
Still, “Through the Looking Glass” wasn’t really about that — the crime was a catalyst for a medical storyline — so it wasn’t as big a deal that the cops disappeared quickly.

The Case Was Fascinating. It Also Demonstrated Why Bronx General Needs Wolf
The case involved neurological deficits that caused problems similar to those experienced by the main character in Alice in Wonderland.
Alyssa kept freaking out because she saw ordinary, small objects as huge — she demanded Wolf drop his pen light because it seemed gigantic to her — and she had a distorted sense of more time passing than had really passed.
I didn’t quite follow how her neurological profile caused this, but that was okay. The mechanism wasn’t the point.
Although Brilliant Minds Season 2 doesn’t seem to emphasize it much anymore, Wolf still has an inability to read faces that made him understand what it was like for Alyssa to experience the world in a scary, distorted way that other people didn’t understand.

Wolf’s discussion with Alyssa about how he felt like an alien in a world that everyone else fit in brought tears to my eyes.
I’ve felt that way too, especially when I was a transgender and autistic kid trying to navigate a world that then didn’t even have language for what I was.
I loved that Wolf put that experience into words, and even more so that he was able to use it to connect and empathize with Alyssa before he even found out what was wrong with her. Plus, the entire episode dealt with the hospital staff believing that Wolf was fragile just because he’d been in a mental hospital, reinforcing those feelings.
Was that cop too quick to shoot Alyssa?

If his time at Hudson Oaks has taught him anything, it’s how to be more open about his struggles and use them to help others, which is beautiful to see.
Speaking of which, how cute was that scene where he asked Nichols to dinner?

Nichols and Wolf Are The Couple We All Need
One of the worst things about Brilliant Minds ending is that Nichols and Wolf’s relationship was undeveloped for most of the season, and it is finally roaring back to life just as the series draws to a close.
The two had such a cute, awkward conversation on Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 18 when Wolf invited Nichols to his dinner party, and then they followed it up with that equally compelling dishwashing scene in the kitchen after the event was over.
The episode ended on the kind of note that will keep Nichols/Wolf fans talking, coming back… and mourning that there won’t be a Season 3 to further develop the relationship.
Nichols admitted that he wasn’t sure what his feelings were for Wolf, which is code for the fact that he wants him back and just has to find the will to fight for him.

If the series were returning, we’d probably end with something ambiguous — an almost kiss, a look, some type of cliffhanger that promised more to come.
Instead, we have two episodes to wrap this up forever, and I’m betting on a happy ending for these two.
What about you, Brilliant Minds fanatics? Did the Wolf/Nichols stuff do it for you?
As excited as I was about this entire episode (except for the baby with botulism story, which annoyed me), I felt like the fact that the series is almost over limits the possibilities here.
