Chris Hemsworth Says His Next Thor Appearance Should Be His Last



Despite previously talking about playing Thor for years to come, Chris Hemsworth seems to have been reflecting on the possible end of the MCU god.

Thor 5 was already being teased even as Thor: Love and Thunder hit cinemas, but Chris Hemsworth has suggested that Thor’s next time out could be his last appearance in the MCU. As one of the three founding Avengers members still appearing in the MCU, Thor has become a franchise veteran, along with Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye and Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk. However, nothing lasts forever, and even Gods must face their final battle. For Hemsworth, that time could be fast approaching.

There is one seemingly unavoidable rule in the MCU. Every main character cannot simply fade away without being given a proper ending to their journey. For Iron Man and Black Widow, this came in their deaths, while Steve Rogers bowed out as Captain America after choosing to simply grow old and live his life. So how exactly would Thor leave the MCU behind? Well, after previously saying he was up for playing Thor for as long as they would have him, it seems Hemsworth may have had a change of heart. He told Vanity Fair:

“Yeah, for sure. I feel like we’d probably have to close the book if I ever did it again, you know what I mean? I feel like it probably warrants that. I feel like it’d probably be the finale, but that’s not based on anything anyone’s told me or any sort of plans. You have this birth of a hero, the journey of a hero, then the death of a hero, and I don’t know—am I at that stage? Who knows?”

Will Thor Die in the Multiverse Saga?

It is clear that while many of Earth’s mightiest heroes survived the Infinity Saga, the same may not be true of the Multiverse Saga. The path to Avengers: Secret Wars has been set, and the multiverse could spell the end for many characters and the beginning for new additions to the Marvel franchise. Will Thor make the ultimate sacrifice to prevent Kang the Conqueror from ruling this world and all worlds?

Very little is known about that just yet, but there are already several possible theories about how Thor could make his exit circulating on social media. Previously, Loki star Tom Hiddleston has hinted that he will pass the torch to a new generation of MCU characters. If Kevin Feige and co are looking to pull on the heartstrings the way they did with Tony Stark’s Endgame death, then having Thor being reunited with his brother and Jane Foster in Valhalla could be the way to do it.

Of course, while the Thor: Love and Thunder end sting that “Thor Will Return,” was assumed to suggest a new movie, especially given the tease of Hercules in the mid-credits scene, but that all happened in another film rather than one specifically focused on Thor? There are only a handful of people who probably know the answer to that, and as usual, they are keeping their cards close to their chest for now. For everyone else, it is just a case of sitting back and watching the Marvel Cinematic Universe continue to unfold in its own time.
