Pirates ‘deeply concerned’ after bus driver transporting team arrested for DUI

A bus driver hired to transport the Pittsburgh Pirates from Chicago to Milwaukee was arrested for driving under the influence while transporting the team, Illinois law enforcement officials said, according to Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

“We are deeply concerned regarding what transpired (Thursday) night,” senior vice president of communications and broadcasting Brian Warecki said in a statement. “The important thing is that all of our personnel arrived in Milwaukee safely.

“Buses are contracted out to a local provider, which was consistent with this trip, and we are now in communication with the appropriate parties regarding this matter.”

State troopers pulled over Ronald Funderburke roughly 25 minutes away from Wrigley Field on I-94 at 11:30 p.m. after receiving reports of erratic driving, per Mackey. State police also said the 61-year-old driver wasn’t following his designated police escort.

Funderburke, who isn’t affiliated directly with the Pirates, was reportedly arrested after displaying multiple signs of impairment.

The Pirates wrapped up a three-game set against the Cubs late Thursday evening. They began another three-game series against the Brewers as scheduled Friday.
