Rick and Morty Gets a Trailer for Its Hellraiser Episode

Rick and Morty is known for blending science fiction with many existential ideas. It combines hilarious, raunchy dialogue with ideas that make you question humanity and even your own existence. Often, the creators combine these ideas with popular movie premises that are able to intertwine with the plot of the episode. In the latest trailer, horror fans will be pleased to see the chaotic world of Rick and Morty blending with the terrifying universe of Hellraiser.

The Hellraiser franchise, from Clive Barker, involves beings known as Cenobites, a group of extra-dimensional, sadomasochistic demons who don’t understand the difference between pleasure and pain. The Cenobites are lead by “Pinhead,” who has become an iconic horror movie character. “Pinhead” and the Cenobites wreak horrifying havoc on the people who call to them.

Hellraiser also made recent news as a new TV series from the franchise will be coming to HBO Max. According to Inverse, the series will be “exploring the story of the Cenobites” and Barker will be attached to this series as an “executive editor.”

In a statement from Deadline, Barker said he is “delighted the Hellraiser mythology is seeing a new life. It’s time the stories went back to their roots. I’m eager to bring to a new audience the most powerful and ancient elements of horror: the darkest evil invading our human lives and how we must find in ourselves the power to resist it.”

It’s unclear how Pinhead and the Cenobites will tie into Rick and Morty, but it seems like the Hellraiser premise would blend well with the twisted minds of the animated series. Expect plenty of blood and gore as the series never shies away from being as gory as possible, often for laughs.

In addition to Hellraiser, the latest trailer features plenty of other references to pop culture franchises. There is a clip of the five main characters fighting a monster in a Power Rangers- type mechazord. There is also another scene of scene of Rick involved in a Scarface shootout, even uttering the famous quote from Al Pacino with a little Rick spin on it.

Parodying movies is nothing new to Rick and Morty. It’s very common to see the plots for each episode be based on a popular film. Many of the films parodied by the series includes Titanic, A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Prestige, Jurassic Park, Guardians of the Galaxy, and The Purge. The premise of the series itself is a raunchy spin on Back to the Future.

Each episode features Morty and his alcoholic, genius, psychopath grandpa Rick going on multidimensional and galactic adventures. The series is created by Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland. Roiland also voices the two main characters and the humor often features Roiland going completely off-script with obvious improv being animated into the episode.

New episodes of Rick and Morty will premiere on June 20th at 11:00 pm ET/PT on Adult Swim. It’s unclear when we’ll be getting the Hellraiser episode or what it’ll even be about, but we can’t wait to see how these two twisted worlds combine.
