i-D launched its newest digital cover today featuring hyperpop singer/songwriter Slayyyter. Photographed by Neva Wireko and styled by Imaan Sayed, the cover is accompanied by an in-depth intervirew by Nicolaia Rips which apparently took place in the back of Sarabeth’s on Central Park South, where the artist, born Catherine Grace Garner, turned up in what she called her “wacky aunt pants” and noted it was probably the first time the term “crust punk” has been uttered in a Sarabeth’s.
According to Slayyyter, she began writing her new album, WOR$T GIRL IN AMERICA, at a moment she described as a downward tipping point in her career when she was contemplating a move back to St. Louis and leaving music altogether. She worked on the record thinking that if this were to be her final album, what, then, would her legacy be. She also spoke publicly about her estrangement from her father, his substance abuse, and her own sobriety: “I’m a lot like him, I will admit. I’m his child for sure.”
Later in the interview, Slayyyter took aim at luxury excess in music, calling the sight of an artist flexing a Birkin bag “a grotesque display of wealth,” and explained why she will never take a social media break. i-D also revisits the early-afternoon Coachella set where it all turned — a Friday slot on the Mojave stage that drew a turnout rivalling Chappell Roan’s career-making Lollapalooza performance.
