Michelle Obama and the Obama Foundation revealed this week that the restaurant at the Obama Presidential Center will stand as a permanent tribute to Tafari Campbell. Campbell first cooked for the Obamas at the White House. He passed away in the summer of 2023.
Friends, Tafari Campbell’s name deserves to be known. He entered the Obamas’ lives through the White House kitchen. He cooked for a President and First Lady, and for every guest who came through those doors. The Foundation says he was known for more than his food. Everyone who knew him described him the same way. Warm. Creative. Caring. Joyful.
President Obama’s two terms ended. Campbell stayed. He became the family’s private chef and, over time, became part of the family itself. That’s the kind of loyalty and connection that doesn’t come with a job title.
Mrs. Obama spoke directly about what Campbell meant. Her words do a lot of work in a small space. “When you eat here, I hope you feel what we always felt around Tafari, that a great meal is about so much more than the food,” Mrs. Obama said. “It’s about the love that’s poured into it. It’s about the hands that made it. It’s about the person in the kitchen who wanted you to feel cared for.”

The Obama Presidential Center has been years in development on Chicago’s South Side. It’s designed to serve as a community hub and a public gathering space. The campus will include a museum, public green spaces, and the restaurant that now carries Tafari Campbell’s legacy.
