Bloodlines’ a Box Office Success?

Bloodlines’ a Box Office Success?

When Final Destination 5 was released in 2011, it seemed like the franchise had run its course, after five installments in 11 years. While Final Destination 5 was profitable and regarded by many critics as the franchise’s best sequel, the series and its core audience needed a rest. After a nearly 14-year wait, Final Destination: Bloodlines revitalized the long-dormant franchise in spectacular fashion. In addition to becoming the franchise’s best-reviewed installment, Final Destination: Bloodlines has emerged as the first breakout box-office hit of the summer box-office season.

Final Destination: Bloodlines was projected to gross between $35 million and $40 million in its opening weekend of domestic release, a record-breaking range for the franchise, beating the $27.4 million domestic opening of The Final Destination in 2009. However, Final Destination: Bloodlines blew past this projection with a $51.6 million domestic opening, beating the $48 million domestic opening of Sinners in April. With a worldwide opening-weekend gross of $105.8 million, Final Destination: Bloodlines is poised to easily surpass the $186.1 million total of The Final Destination and become the franchise’s highest-grossing installment.

While Final Destination: Bloodlines, which tells the story of a college student who inherits visions of a deadly premonition from her grandmother, has been praised for incorporating familial themes alongside the franchise’s trademark morbid humor and outlandish death scenes, its success is most attributable to the passage of time. Indeed, the execution and structure of the film are otherwise very similar to that of Final Destination 5, as while Bloodlines features the collapse of a high-rise restaurant tower, Final Destination 5 revolves around a bridge collapse. The ultimate lesson of the film and its surprising success is that nostalgia sometimes seems just as powerful as Death.

While the theatrical release of Final Destination: Bloodlines was boosted by a clever marketing campaign that effectively teased audiences without giving away too many surprises, Final Destination: Bloodlines presently holds an impressive 92% Rotten Tomatoes rating, the highest rating by far for any installment within the Final Destination franchise, followed by the 63% rating for Final Destination 5.

Final Destination: Every Movie Ranked by Goriness

Time to have some fun, and dive into Final Destination, the horror franchise from the 2000s, and rank all the films by their gore content.

As the marketing campaign for Final Destination: Bloodlines promised that the new installment would deliver all the beloved elements that fans have enjoyed over the franchise’s 25-year existence, the film over-delivered on audience expectations. While Final Destination: Bloodlines could’ve been titled Final Destination: The Greatest Hits, in terms of how the new installment recycles the franchise’s most familiar concepts, it nonetheless distinguishes itself through the gleefully diabolical construction of its signature deathtraps, which evoke the fragility of human life and inevitability of Death more forcefully than any of the previous installments.

The ‘Final Destination’ Franchise Has Multi-Generational Appeal

Warner Bros. Pictures

The approximately 14-year period of dormancy within the Final Destination franchise helped Bloodlines, as while viewers who grew up watching the first five installments were hungry for a new film, the long delay enabled a younger generation of viewers to discover and embrace the franchise, as seen with how the first five installments are all presently ranked among the most popular titles on the streaming service Max. Moreover, the box-office success of Final Destination: Bloodlines highlights the timeless appeal of the franchise’s core “Death as a villain” concept, especially since the franchise has had so few recurring characters.

‘Final Destination: Bloodlines’ Revisits Death’s Most Twisted Tricks

With a heartfelt farewell to the late, great Tony Todd, ‘Bloodlines’ is the best in the ‘Final Destination’ series — since the first two, at least.

Of course, while Death is the invisible, unquestioned star of the Final Destination franchise, the other linking presence throughout the history of the franchise is that of mortician William Bludworth, played by franchise stalwart Tony Todd, who died approximately six months before Final Destination: Bloodlines was released. Emaciated and visibly dying, Todd, as Bludworth, chillingly embodies the immutability of death in a haunting scene in which Bludworth talks about the importance of living life to the fullest.

With his health, in addition to obviously recognizing how audiences would perceive his weakened appearance, Todd summoned the strength to give audiences one final scare as Bludworth by connecting the reality of his impending death to the all-consuming specter of death within the franchise, which will never be the same without Todd’s incomparable presence.

‘Final Destination: Bloodlines’ Avoided Disaster by Receiving a Wide Theatrical Release

Warner Bros.

The box-office success of Final Destination: Bloodlines obviously wouldn’t have been possible if distributor Warner Bros. had followed through with its original plan to bypass a theatrical release and send Final Destination: Bloodlines directly to the studio’s Max streaming service. Disney avoided this same mistake last year with Moana 2, which grossed more than $1 billion at the worldwide box office after Disney shifted from a streaming to theatrical release.

By committing to a theatrical release with Final Destination: Bloodlines, which has presently grossed over $121 million at the worldwide box office against a $50 million production cost, Warner Bros. is poised to see much more revenue through digital and streaming than it would have with its original streaming strategy. The box-office success of Final Destination: Bloodlines serves as the latest proverbial nail in the coffin for the argument that studios are better served by giving their high-profile films direct-to-streaming releases. With Final Destination: Bloodlines, Warner Bros. has a major theatrical hit that brought a long-dead franchise back to life.
