James Mangold Says Indiana Jones 5 Script Changed To Address Harrison Ford’s Age

While it could have been easy to de-age Harrison Ford for Indiana Jones 5, James Mangold wanted to see an older Indy which led to scripting changes.

Fans are finally getting to find out a little more about Indiana Jones 5, and James Mangold has been addressing the aging elephant in the room. When Indy 5 hits cinemas next summer, it will be 15 years since Harrison Ford last played everyone’s favorite icon of archeology, and that initially caused a lot of skepticism. Could Ford still play the action hero as he entered his twilight years? Director Mangold wanted to make sure that was something that was met head on in the movie, and that meant some changes from the original script. Speaking to Empire Magazine, Mangold said:

“It became really important to me to figure out how to make this a movie about a hero at sunset. The issues I brought up about Indy’s age were not things I thought were being addressed in the material being developed at the time. There were ‘old’ jokes, but the material itself wasn’t about it. To me, whatever your greatest liability, you should fly straight towards that. If you try to pretend it’s not there, you end up getting slings and arrows the whole way.”

One thing for certain is that Ford certainly threw himself into his Indiana Jones return, even sustaining an arm injury when rehearsing for some classic Indy punch-ups. While Ford has said that filming the movie was not an easy feat, his co-stars have been quick to praise the veteran actor for his ability to bring the action to screen again.

Will Indiana Jones 5 Bring The Franchise To a Fitting End?

One thing that has been made clear is that this is the last time we will see Harrison Ford donning his Fedora and taking off on a race against the bands guys to get his hands on an important artefact. While there may have been some concerns over the believability of an old Indiana leaping from trains and taking part in high speed chases, it seems that Mangold has made sure that nothing about Indy’s advancing years is hidden.

According to recently revealed plot details, Indiana Jones 5 will see our hero jumping forward in time from his last adventure to 1969, where he is becoming a dinosaur of a past era. Out of touch with the “modern” era, Indy will find himself once again coming face to face with his oldest adversaries, Nazis. While exact details of the storyline are obviously not being released, Mads Mikkelsen recently commented that his character will be in a race with Indy to claim an item that can “make the world a better place to live.”

Indiana Jones 5 will see Ford joined by Phoebe Waller-Bridge as Indy’s goddaughter Helena, John Rhys-Davies returning as Indy’s friend Sallah, and Mads Mikkelsen playing ex-Nazi Voller. The cast also includes Thomas Kretschmann, Boyd Holbrook, Shaunette Renée Wilson, Antonio Banderas, Toby Jones, and Olivier Richters. After a number of delays, Indiana Jones 5 will finally arrive in cinemas on June 30, 2023, with James Mangold promising that the first trailer for the movie will be released very soon.
