In 2022, Netflix debuted the first installment in their new crime docu-series, A British Horror Story, which chronicles the now disgraced television personality Jimmy Savile. Savile, best known for hosting Top of the Pops and his many charity works, was unmasked as a vicious predator whose ties to those in high places allowed him to operate in plain sight.
Recently, the series returned with Fred and Rose West: A British Horror Story. This series (unsurprisingly) focuses on Fred and Rose West, who share infamy with Jack the Ripper and the Moors Murderers, Ian Brady and Myra Hindley. A British Horror Story delves deep into a crime spree that shook Britain to its core through archival footage, interviews, and newly discovered evidence.
Who Are Fred and Rose West?
Netflix
From 1967 to 1987, Fred and Rose West operated completely undetected. The West’s home at 25 Cromwell Street became a setting for the prolonged abuse, torture, and murder of 12 victims, two of whom were the pair’s own biological children. Fred and Rose sired 10 children in all, who suffered heinous abuse from their parents. Many of the victims were young women from the Gloucester area, the youngest of whom was only 15 years old.
Rose, who met Fred when she was only 15 and Fred was 27, was groomed for her tasks by Fred, which involved forced sex work and eventually becoming indoctrinated into torture and murder. The appalling nature of crimes perpetrated by Fred and Rose West bears a unique similarity to those committed by other notorious serial murderers in British history, as they’re forever linked with a unique physical location.

For true crime aficionados, the mere mention of 25 Cromwell Street conjures up images of Fred and Rose West, the unspeakable acts which they committed, and the victims buried beneath the cellar. The location connected with the crimes of Fred and Rose West is one of a few notable places forever linked with Britain’s most heinous crimes. Jack the Ripper shall forever be connected to the Whitechapel neighborhood in London’s East End. The “Moors Murderers,” Ian Brady and Myra Hindley, are naturally linked to Saddleworth Moor.
As a physical address, 25 Cromwell Street is as well known as Ten Rillington Place, where the crimes of Steve Christie were committed. The house at 25 Cromwell Street, the location of so much torment and murder, has since been demolished, but the memories of what occurred there still linger in the public consciousness.

It’s a sad truth that evil finds a way to prevail in our society. Fortunately, for Fred and Rose West, there was some measure of justice to be served to the couple whose actions caused the deaths of so many. While operating undetected for many years, the West’s reign of terror came to an end in 1992, when the couple was investigated regarding allegations of child abuse in their home. A search of the property conducted in 1994 revealed nine bodies of Fred and Rose West’s victims. In a perfect world, Fred and Rose West would both be called to answer for their crimes and given a punishment equal to the severity of the treatment they gave so many.
