James Brolin in The Amityville Horror
American International Pictures
Hold onto your hats, horror fans, because you’re not going to like this one. After being beaten to death, the Amityville Horror franchise is returning thanks to Amazon MGM Studios, which has just nailed down a director for a new reimagining of the infamous horror classic. The original film was a runaway blockbuster back in 1979, as folks were eager to see the purported true story of what happened to the Lutz family after they moved into 112 Ocean Avenue. While it took obvious liberties with author Jay Anson’s book, the film was a smash hit, raking in more than $86 million at the box office to become the second highest-grossing movie of the year.
Deadline reports that director David F. Sandberg has been tapped to direct the new Amityville Horror project, which sees Ian Goldberg & Richard Naing teaming up to write the script. Sandberg is, of course, the director behind this year’s Until Dawn, as well as the filmmaker behind Shazam! and its sequel, Shazam! Fury of the Gods. Meanwhile, Goldberg and Naing are fresh off the massive success of The Conjuring: Last Rites, which they penned along with David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick. It went on to open to a massive $194 million worldwide, making it the most successful opening for a horror movie in history.
