McGregor’s return to the franchise after two decades was a huge event in 2022, not least for his Obi-Wan Kenobi series also seeing the return of Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader. Since the series aired, the Scottish actor has constantly fielded questions about possibly reprising his role again. While speaking recently to LadBible, the subject was once again on the table. This time, McGregor appeared to completely shut down the possibility of Obi-Wan Kenobi getting a second season, but not his own return to the role. He said:

“The truth is I’ve talked about having to cover for doing the Obi-Wan season for years, I had to lie about that and I’m not lying about this now. I don’t know. There’s been no phone call to me from Lucasfilm, or Disney saying, ‘Let’s do another one’. Obi-Wan was made as a limited series and it’s out and people like it, which I’m very, very pleased about. I love doing it. I hope we get a chance to do another one and I’m sure we will. I’m pretty sure, you know, I’ve got a few years yet before I’m the same age as Alec Guinness was in A New Hope. So there’s time to tell more stories in there.”

Ewan McGregor Was an Integral Part of the Star Wars Prequels

McGregor’s portrayal of Kenobi became a defining part of the Star Wars prequel trilogy, but was no mean feat, with the actor stepping into the robes of the cinematic icon that was Alec Guinness. Despite facing a mixed reception upon release, the prequel movies have undergone a reevaluation by fans, and are now looked upon much more fondly than they were 20 years ago.

The return of characters like Darth Vader, portrayed by Hayden Christensen, alongside McGregor’s Obi-Wan, in recent projects underscores the franchise’s commitment to its legacy characters and ensures that fans mostly get what they want. These comebacks not only serve as a bridge between different eras of the Star Wars universe but also between the generations of fans, from those who were there when Star Wars opened in cinemas in 1977 to those who have only begun discovering the saga through Disney+.

Related Obi-Wan Kenobi’s Ewan McGregor Says Star Wars Prequels Being “Hammered” was Hard Ewan McGregor found the criticism of The Phantom Menace difficult knowing they had two more movies to make.

McGregor’s willingness to return to the role is something that has remained consistent across the last two years, even if Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy has been frequently vague on Kenobi’s chances of a return. With the franchise looking to expand in several different directions, all of which seem to be leading away from the Skywalker Saga, the question is whether McGregor’s enthusiasm will be enough to see him find his way back to the saga again.
