The Lincoln Lawyer Was Canceled Before It Even Began — That’s Why Five Seasons Feels Miraculous

The TV industry has been in a weird state of flux in recent years, with even the most remarkable performers being brought to a close.

With the news this week that The Lincoln Lawyer will end after Season 5 on Netflix, I can’t help but think about the fact that the series almost never saw the light of day.

Back in 2020, the legal drama was a CBS pilot that was unceremoniously canceled before a single frame was shot.

Based on The Lincoln Lawyer novels and hailing from proven TV hitmaker David E. Kelley, it felt like a matter of when, not if, the series would land a full order.

The early cancellation came at a time when productions across Hollywood were grinding to a halt amid the COVID-19 pandemic, forcing networks and studios to rethink their development slates on the fly.

Some networks opted for straight-to-series orders for projects they believed in. CBS clearly didn’t feel The Lincoln Lawyer warranted that level of confidence at the time.

Given that CBS dramas in 2020 were still producing close to 20 episodes a season, I imagine that version of The Lincoln Lawyer would have looked very different from the slicker, more serialized take that eventually emerged on Netflix.

For one, Logan Marshall-Green was originally set to star as Mickey Haller.

By the time the show landed at Netflix, the role had gone to Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, who ultimately made the character his own.

The Lincoln Lawyer Flourished on Netflix

Details about how much changed creatively have largely stayed under wraps, but my best guess is that the CBS version would have leaned more toward the procedural and less toward the serialized than the streaming iteration fans eventually embraced.

The move to Netflix felt seamless, with Becki Newton, Neve Campbell, Jazz Raycole, and Angus Sampson helping round out an ensemble that made the show feel like it was always destined for a streaming platform.

Many TV shows never make it past the pilot stage, which makes The Lincoln Lawyer’s journey all the more remarkable.

A cast was assembled, filming never even began, and the series still found a second life on Netflix, lasting five successful seasons.

CBS has remained one of broadcast TV’s steadiest networks, so I doubt executives lost sleep over the decision.

Still, there had to be at least some curiosity about whether they passed on what could have become a major broadcast hit.

Instead, the show became a consistent force on Netflix’s streaming charts, which explains why renewals often came early while so many other Netflix dramas struggled to secure even another season.

That’s why the decision to end the series now feels so surprising. The Lincoln Lawyer was clearly a strong performer, making the cancellation come a bit out of left field.

Netflix’s Cancellation Stings a Little

Still, the fact that the series is getting a planned final season says a lot about how much Netflix values the property.

In an era where many streaming shows end abruptly, fans will at least get a proper conclusion. And that matters.

A polished legal drama with a definitive ending is exactly the kind of comfort-watch audiences continue to seek out on streaming.

Even after the original episodes stop airing, The Lincoln Lawyer feels poised to keep attracting viewers for years to come.

Looking back, The Lincoln Lawyer feels like the little show that could — a series that survived cancellation before filming and still became one of Netflix‘s steadiest hits.

This was a show that almost didn’t exist, and it broke through bigger than anyone — including many critics — expected.
