First Steps’ Reviews Tease the Team’s MCU Future Ahead of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

The MCU’s biggest movie in years, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, is almost here. Before audiences get to see it on the big screen on July 25, some lucky critics have been treated to early access to the film, and the first reviews are now flooding the internet. Directed by Matt Shakman, the film stars Pedro Pascal as Mr. Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Benn Grimm, with Julia Garner playing the Silver Surfer and Ralph Ineson as Galactus. First Steps is one of, if not the most anticipated, new movies of 2025 for many, and, according to the first reviews, fans are in for a good time this weekend.

The first reviews for The Fantastic Four: First Steps are here, and they’re a good sign for MCU fans. A Rotten Tomatoes score hasn’t yet been calculated, but, judging by the first reviews, expect First Steps to earn a very strong rating on the review aggregate site. Kicking off with MovieWeb’s own Julian Roman, they heralded that Fantastic Four: First Steps “finally does justice” to the titular team, after several failed movies over the past two decades. Scoring the film a 3.5/5, they wrote:

“The Fantastic Four: First Steps fulfills the comic book vision of legendary creators Stan Lee and Jack Kirby after decades of cinematic failures. The beloved superheroes are instantly recognizable with superb casting and a retro-futuristic ’60s production design that looks incredible.”

The Fantastic Four Will Have a Long Future in the MCU

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

Marvel Studios must be breathing a small sigh of relief following the first reviews for The Fantastic Four: First Steps. While there’s still that all-important box office figure, especially off the back of the DCU’s Superman’s success, good first reviews are a great sign for First Steps’ longevity at the box office. Strong reviews are also a great indicator for The Fantastic Four’s MCU future, especially as they will play a major part in the next two Avengers films. The cast of The Fantastic Four: First Steps are all confirmed to return for Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars, as Doctor Doom (Robert Downey Jr.) is one of the team’s most iconic villains. Avengers: Doomsday opens in theaters on December 18, 2026.
