House of the Dragon Star Milly Alcock Discusses Learning Valyrian for the HBO Series

House of the Dragon, like Game of Thrones, is a notoriously difficult series to produce. There are countless hours with makeup, wigs, and shooting in harsh locations. Line rehearsals are just one of the things required on set for the series, as the show is known for heavy dialogue consisting of both political discussions and everyday conversation between characters. Milly Alcock, who plays Rhaenyra Targaryen, is forced to learn the same script in multiple languages, making her daily tasks much more difficult.

Valyrian is a language created by George R.R. Martin, often heard in the Game of Thrones universe, although not many characters know how to speak it. Since House of the Dragon focuses on the Targaryen family, we often witness the cast switch between tongues. Emilia Clarke nailed her scenes as Daenerys Targaryen when she spoke in Valyrian during the original HBO series, and Alcock has done the same through the first three episodes of the prequel show.

Alcock recently appeared on the official House of the Dragon podcast, discussing her work thus far and the events of the third episode in the series. The 22-year-old actress shared what it’s like to deliver a scene in Valyrian, saying, “It was just kind of like learning another song in another language.”

“Actually really fun. It was just kind of like learning another song in another language basically. I would learn the scene in English and then I would have it printed out on a sheet, and they would have it phonetically and then they would have an audio recording. And then I would just say it, so it became muscle memory. So I didn’t have to think about what I was saying. It was just like, my mouth was on autopilot basically.”

Milly Alcock’s Time on the Series is Coming to a Close

Audiences have seen two significant time jumps through three House of the Dragon episodes. A three-year skip took place between the second and third episodes, which will be far from the biggest one we will see this season. Milly Alcock and Emily Carey are two of the four actors who will be replaced in the upcoming episodes, with Emma D’Arcy and Olivia Cooke taking their places, respectively.

Reports have already confirmed that halfway through the first season, fans will see a 10-year time jump. That means characters like Rhaenyra and Alicent, who are currently teenagers, will be replaced with older actors who can portray them as they near their thirties. The rest of the cast, such as Matt Smith, Paddy Considine, Steve Toussaint, Rhys Ifans, and Fabien Frankel, will continue their roles for as long as they stay with the series.

House of the Dragon is nearing the mid-way point of the season, meaning Alcock’s and Carey’s time on the series will be coming to a close unless we see them in flashbacks. You can watch House of the Dragon, premiering every Sunday on HBO and HBO Max at 9 pm E.T.
