Obi-Wan Kenobi Writer Shares His Thoughts on the Grand Inquisitor’s Death

Spoiler Alert for Obi-Wan Kenobi Episodes 1-3We haven’t seen much from the Grand Inquisitor, played by Rupert Friend, in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series. He made it to Chapter Two in the show before Third Sister Reva struck her lightsaber into him. Fans of the series Star Wars Rebels will know that the character doesn’t meet his demise until much further down the timeline, so audiences are wondering, did Obi-Wan Kenobi break canon? Vanity Fair recently sat down with Joby Harold, head writer and executive producer of the series to get some answers to the burning questions Star Wars fanatics have been wondering.

When Harold was asked whether this particular plot point would break canon, he had this to say:

“As you know, we would never break canon. So, that’s all I’ll say. [Laughs.] Canon is everything. I can’t speak to it beyond that. We all know where we’re going in the show [from previous films and TV shows] so anytime you can undercut that, pull the rug on that, have a reversal…”

It seems as though we say see a return from the Grand Inquisitor, in some form, during the series. If we do, his future encounters with Reva should be interesting, to say the least. Harold was also questioned about the return of Darth Vader, and the writer revealed the scene with Lord Vader slaying innocent bystanders was almost even more gruesome.

“From a Vader point of view, we’re all living with the memory of the end of Rogue One, and how effective that was. It was very gratifying to see Vader finally be unleashed in a sequence like that, so we wanted to try to trump it if we could. It was a lot more extreme, at one point. I got pulled back a little bit on that. It was so important to define Vader’s anger and rage. There’s an emotionality to the choices he’s making that are a little further than we’re used to seeing with Vader. He’s pushed a little more than the Vader we know. Obi-Wan isn’t the finished article before [the original Star Wars], and we can look at Vader in the same way.”

The Vader we see in Obi-Wan is undoubtedly more powerful than the version in A New Hope, and fans will be keen to see more of that as the series progresses.

After ten years of near-isolation on Tatooine, Obi-Wan certainly is a bit rusty with his lightsaber. In the third episode of Obi-Wan Kenobi, we see the first confrontation between the Jedi Master and his former Padawan. Unfortunately, the fight didn’t go well for Kenobi, who was nearly burned alive by Lord Vader, who intended to torture Obi-Wan the same way he was tortured in Revenge of the Sith. It’s possible that Vader could have ended his former master then and there; however, he intends to toy with Obi-Wan, breaking both his mind and body.

We will have to wait till next Wednesday to find out where the series goes from here, but there is a guarantee that we will see yet another confrontation between Obi-Wan and Darth Vader in the future.
