She-Hulk Writer Reveals How ‘Attorney at Law’ Was Added to Official Title

Why is it called She-Hulk: Attorney at Law when the series was originally announced as simply She-Hulk? The answer has been revealed. Debuting on Disney+ on Aug. 18, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law stars Tatiana Maslany as the titular lawyer/superhero. The show was created by Jessica Gao who serves as head writer.

In a new interview with Lifehacker, Gao commented on the show’s title situation. She revealed that the title change came about after Marvel boss Kevin Feige happened to be watching some footage with the crew. When Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner uttered the phrase, it clicked with Feige that it would make for a good TV show title, and from that point on, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law stuck.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

“We always had the line in the show where Bruce says ‘She-Hulk attorney at law, it’s got a nice ring to it’. And one day we were watching cuts and when it got to that scene Kevin just said ‘that’s a great title for a show, that should be the title of the show’. And that’s it. You know when the golden tongue of Kevin Feige speaks then it becomes canon and that’s really how it happened.”

Jessica Gao Had a Good Feeling About She-Hulk as a Comedy Show

Marvel Studios

As for what really had Jessica Gao wanting to pursue a She-Hulk series, that can be traced to the comic book run with John Byrne. Gao really enjoyed those comics and found it to be different enough from other superhero fiction that she thought it would make for good inspiration for a comedy series.

“It had this levity to it and also was just silly and didn’t take itself too seriously. I loved that it was really meta and I loved that she was super self-aware. She knew that she was in a comic. That just felt so new and different. She would argue with Byrne [in the comics], she would argue with the editor and she would also make fun of comic book tropes. So to me, that is the iconic essential She-Hulk and so, of course, that naturally lends itself to half-hour comedies.”

Gao also noted how the show’s writing comes from a staff that is mostly made up of women, each of them contributing to the story based on their own personal experiences.

“We all had these experiences, everyone had a different perspective and point of view and we just mined each other’s lives. A lot of the time it was just a lot of discussions about what it’s like being a woman and what it would be like to be a woman who is a superhero and in the public eye. You started seeing a lot of commonalities and a lot of themes emerge and those were the things we really infused into the show.”
