The Ghoul’s Connection to Lucy on Fallout Is More Than Hank

The Ghoul’s Connection to Lucy on Fallout Is More Than Hank

In the early stages of Fallout Season 2, we see The Ghoul and Lucy on a journey together.

The Fallout Season 1 finale ended with them starting this journey together, both wanting to find Hank MacLean and The Ghoul, knowing exactly where he would go.

As the second season gets started, we can see that this journey together is more than just finding Hank for The Ghoul, although he won’t want to admit it.

Hank Is Part of It

Sure enough, Hank is part of the reason the two are on this journey together, as they have the same goal in the end.

They both want to find Hank, though The Ghoul seeks answers about his family, and Lucy seeks to bring her father to justice.

There may be a part of The Ghoul that wants to show Lucy what the world has really become since the bombs dropped.

What she doesn’t know is that Vault-Tec dropped the bombs, and The Ghoul listened in on this conversation. He knows what kind of work her father was into 200 years ago, and he wants her to find out all about it.

Lucy grew up in a vault, though, and it’s not all that easy to wipe out decades of conditioning — and that’s what being raised in a vault technically is on Fallout.

Those from Vault 31 wanted to make sure people were raised in a particular way, so that they could create the “perfect” world when everyone on the land died out. Well, that’s going to take a while, because there are plenty of people surviving out there.

So, it all comes back to The Ghoul wanting Lucy to see the world for herself, and to see Hank as the man he really is.

It’s not like Lucy needs to see more, though. Now she knows her father killed her mother — and committed genocide on a whole town — she knows that her father is an evil man.

Lucy Is The Ghoul from Before

There’s more to The Ghoul’s side of this journey, though, and we can see it all play out thanks to the flashbacks we keep getting.

For the sake of this, I’ll refer to The Ghoul as ‘Cooper’ when it comes to talking about the flashbacks.

Cooper was just like Lucy. While not completely brainwashed, he had a lot of hope for the world and wanted to see people do better.

He believed in an America standing up against the Communists, and he fought for freedom.

However, he began to learn truths he didn’t want to, including that Vault-Tec was actually the story’s villain. His own wife was the villain.

Cooper had to learn the hard way that his wife wasn’t the “savior” that he had viewed her as, and she wasn’t doing good work to keep people protected.

While he didn’t necessarily like the vaults, especially the idea of no dogs in them, he accepted them for the longest time. He was sure that this was the right thing.

Yet, there was something at the back of his mind, and it all became clear once he overheard his wife saying that Vault-Tec would be the ones to drop the bombs.

They would control when the apocalypse would happen, allowing them to ensure the right people were in the vaults at the right time.

There’s clearly more to come of this story on Fallout Season 2, as we still don’t know why Cooper and his daughter were at the birthday party when that first bomb dropped.

Fallout Depicts Similarities Between The Ghoul and Lucy

Nor do we know who Cooper ended up losing his daughter, or why he’s looking for his “family” and not just his daughter. There’s an important distinction there.

It’s potentially further linked to what happened during the Fallout Season 2 premiere, when Moldaver wanted him to kill Dr. Robert House.

As they sat in the diner, Cooper wasn’t too sure about doing this, and it once again shows us the similarities between The Ghoul and Lucy.

Is it possible that Cooper chose not to kill House? Maybe he wanted to bring House to justice, just as Lucy wants to make sure her father faces justice, too.

We know that House protected Las Vegas enough to prevent too many of the bombs from dropping there. And we also know that there’s a chance House found a way to preserve his mind — because he couldn’t have preserved his body for 200 years.

So, something went wrong with Cooper attempting to kill him, and it’s possible that Cooper didn’t even try.

If he thought it was wrong, he would have focused on justice, and 200 years later, he regrets it. He doesn’t want Lucy to live with the same regret.

This journey is more than just two people finding the same man. It’s a chance for The Ghoul to help someone not become himself.

Fallout airs on Wednesdays on Prime Video.

  • While it’s clear that Dr. House is one of the big Fallout Season 2 villains, his arc highlights the real dangers of technology.

  • Fallout Season 2 Episode 1 opens with the New Vegas and Vault storylines, making sure we know there is a bigger threat out there.
