  • MultiVersus Developer Teases the Addition of Breaking Bad’s Walter White

A developer for the crossover fighting game MultiVersus offered a promising response to a fan campaign to add Walter White.

Breaking Bad protagonist Walter White may have been able to overcome nefarious foes like Gustavo Fring, but how would he compare against the likes of Batman, Shaggy, Gizmo, and Bugs Bunny? If the Bryan Cranston-played character makes it into the crossover fighting game MultiVersus, fans could actually find out the answer to that question. Released last year, MultiVersus is a free-to-play game in the style of Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. franchise. Included are various characters from the Warner Bros. Discovery library, which has resulted in the game’s playable roster ending up very random with playable fighters ranging from the Iron Giant and Arya Stark to Steven Universe and Rick and Morty.

On social media, there has been a popular fan campaign for Walter White to be added to the game’s roster as a playable character. As Sony owns the rights to Breaking Bad, some rights issues will need to be sorted out before that can happen, but fans are nevertheless working on making the dream a reality. Now, per ComicBook.com, fans have gotten a tease from senior character artist Dan Eder, who offered a vague but promising response to the suggestion to put Heisenberg in the game.

“The only way I’ll have a good 2023 is if we see Walter White join MultiVersus that year,” tweeted an account created for the fan campaign.

“Expect good things,” Eder directly responded.

While Bryan Cranston returned to the role of Walter White for the final season of Better Call Saul last year, there are no plans to develop any more stories in that world at this time. That could mean that fans will not see Walter in any more TV shows, but that of course doesn’t mean that we don’t see any more of the character. He can theoretically turn up in other mediums, such as in the video game world, perhaps with Cranston reprising the role by doing voiceover work. In any case, it’s starting to seem like the fan campaign may actually have the MultiVersus developers considering a revival of Heisenberg by getting him into the game.

Breaking Bad aired for five seasons from 2008 to 2013. Created by Vince Gilligan, the series follows Cranston as Walter White, a high school chemistry teacher who partners up with a former student (Aaron Paul) to produce high-quality meth as a way of paying for his medical bills, only to develop a taste for building an empire in the criminal underworld. The series was an immense success, garnering a plethora of Emmys and widespread acclaim. Its spinoff series, Better Call Saul, ended this year, while a movie sequel, El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie, hit Netflix in 2019.
