Original ‘Deadpool’ Director Reveals His ‘X-Men’ Adaptation Idea and It Sounds Awesome

Tim Miller, the director of 2016’s first Deadpool film, believes Marvel is yet to reveal its strongest secret weapon. Although the studio is carefully planning the next MCU phase, Miller says that the Marvel IP could benefit from a future adaptation of the X-Men universe. He also used the opportunity to reveal his past plans to develop an X-Men movie. But then, the merger happened.

Miller’s work in the industry has had mixed results. After Deadpool, he directed 2019’s Terminator Dark Fate, the last film in the Terminator series before franchise owners decided it was time to take a break. After this, Miller took on the role of executive producer of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, and started working on Netflix’s series Love, Death & Robots.

Now that we have seen Deadpool team up with Wolverine, superhero fans are wondering who he will team up with next.

The Deadpool director is currently promoting his participation in the fourth volume of the animated series. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, he showed his intention to return to the superhero genre after staying out of it for almost ten years. Miller believes that the X-Men franchise is Marvel’s “secret weapon,” and revealed he has even asked Kevin Feige for a chance to make a film about the beloved mutants:

“I think that Marvel has this secret weapon they haven’t been able to unveil yet, which is the whole X-Men universe — which is what got me into comics. The X-Men are my favorite characters. I wrote [Marvel boss] Kevin Feige, and I’m like, ‘If there was ever anything that you would let me do in the Marvel Universe, please, the X-Men would be it.’ I had an X-Men movie in development at Fox when the merger happened, which would have been awesome. [It was based on] X-Men 143, which was Home Alone meets Alien.”

Miller also appears to have an open mind in terms of what superhero universe to adapt. He even mentioned DC as the next best thing: “But if DC ever gets around to doing The Authority, that’s my favorite comic ever — it’s the Justice League if they killed people. I think there’s a lot of room left [in the genre], a lot of different stories to tell.”

The ‘X-Men’ Will Return in the Post-Endgame Era

Disney

The X-Men will return to the big screen at some point. It’s just a matter of time until negotiations end, and Marvel Studios makes the official announcement. The studio’s priority is the return of the Avengers in full form, but Miller may have a point in saying that Marvel should not look down on the mutants and their potential appeal.

According to recent reports, Marvel Studios is seriously considering Jake Schreier to revive the X-Men franchise. This is because the director showed his potential with the latest superhero giant to land on the big screen, Thunderbolts*. Although Tim Miller seems to have a lot of passion for the X-Men IP, he’s probably not on Marvel’s radar as a potential director. Schreier could be the best filmmaker to carry out the reboot, and Miller seems to agree that his vision for the genre is good:

“I thought Thunderbolts* was an excellent film. Florence Pugh was amazing. All the other actors did an amazing job and the action was good and grounded. Overall, the movie was thematically consistent. You kind of forget how much that matters — when everything ties together in a way that feels super satisfying.”
