Akon Gets Candid on Prison, Polyamory, and the Story Behind His Hamster Ball

Akon sat down with the WNTT podcast this week and held nothing back. The Senegalese-American singer and producer went deep on polyamory, his time in prison, the calculated strategy behind his 2000s commercial peak, and yes, the hamster ball.

The WNTT team had been trying to land this interview for a while. Turns out, it was worth every bit of the wait.

On Polyamory and Having Multiple Wives

Akon has never been quiet about his personal life. He practices polyamory and has multiple wives, and he addressed it in the WNTT conversation plainly and without apology. No deflecting, no hedging. He laid it out straight, same energy he brings to everything else.

Hearing him put it all on record, on his own terms, carries real weight.

The Strategy Behind Those 2000s Hits

Akon’s commercial run from the mid-2000s onward was genuinely something. “Smack That,” “Don’t Matter,” “Right Now (Na Na Na),” “Beautiful” – the records piled up, and so did the chart positions. He wasn’t just one of the most recognizable voices on the radio. He was one of the main architects of that whole sound.

In the WNTT episode, he walked through the deliberate thinking behind those records. It wasn’t luck or right-place-right-time. There was a method, a specific approach to building songs that connected across genres and regions. He thought about it hard.

His impact ran deeper than his own name too. He signed a young Lady Gaga to his Konvict Muzik label early on. Almost nobody else was paying attention yet. He also co-wrote and produced for some of the biggest names in the game. His fingerprints are all over records you still hear today.

How Jail Reshaped His Worldview

This is the most raw part of the conversation. Akon has spoken about doing time before – a conviction for grand theft auto that happened early in his adult life. His music career hadn’t started yet. In the WNTT interview, he came back to that period and talked about what it actually did to his perspective.

He’s not delivering a redemption speech. It’s more honest than that. It’s someone explaining what changed and why, without dressing it up.

Knowing that backstory makes the catalog land differently. The highs feel earned in a specific, personal way.

Why He Performs in a Hamster Ball

Okay, this is the fun one. Akon performs live inside an enormous transparent ball. He rolls through crowds. He bounces around the stage. It’s produced some of the wildest concert footage you’ll find anywhere. For years, the full story behind the choice stayed quiet.

The WNTT episode finally has the answer. No spoilers, but it makes sense once you hear it. A cool, deliberate, only-Akon kind of sense.

Akon has spent over two decades at the center of the music world. He’s had real highs and real lows, and he came out of all of it with a perspective that’s genuinely rare. The full WNTT episode is out now.
