Fresh Trailer Teases Twisted Horror Rom-Com Starring Daisy Edgar-Jones & Sebastian Stan

Searchlight Pictures has released a new trailer for the upcoming comedy-slash-horror flick, Fresh. Starring Daisy Edgar-Jones and Sebastian Stan, Fresh takes the pitfalls and hurdles found in online dating and seeking romance to the extreme, as Noa meets a seemingly charming man, Steve, who harbors a sinister secret.

After setting up what appears to be a fairly run-of-the-mill romantic comedy about a somewhat cynical woman and her struggle in finding real, fulfilling love within this modern world of quick, cold rejection and swiping left and right, the trailer for Fresh suddenly becomes something else entirely. Featuring the kind of kinetic energy and colors of a horror movie, it seems that, much like Steve himself, Fresh will lure you in before pulling the rug out from under you.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

Fresh is the first feature from director Mimi Cave and follows Noa (Daisy Edgar-Jones), who meets the alluring Steve (Sebastian Stan) at a grocery store and—given her frustration with dating apps—takes a chance and gives him her number. After their first date, Noa is smitten and accepts Steve’s invitation to a romantic weekend getaway, only to find that her new paramour has been hiding some unusual appetites.

“What’s going on?” Noa asks Steve during the intriguing footage. “I’m going to tell you,” he responds, “but you’re going to freak out.” So, what are these “unusual appetites” exactly? Is Steve a Christian Grey type, or is it something far more troubling? Well, a poster released alongside the trailer could offer some more clues…

Does that clear things up for you? A severed hand wrapped up in plastic like a piece of meat could not send a much clearer message regarding what exactly Steve has in mind.

Starring Jonica T. Gibbs as Millie, Charlotte Le Bon as Ann, Dayo Okeniyi as Paul, Andrea Bang as Penny, Brett Dier as Chad alongside Daisy Edgar-Jones as Noa, and Sebastian Stan as Steve, Fresh premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 20, 2022. The movie has been met with rave reviews so far, with Fresh currently sitting at an enticing 85% on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes. “As gripping as it is upsetting, Fresh makes a provocative meal out of the horror of modern dating,” the consensus reads.

Daisy Edgar-Jones has been a rising star ever since her stunningly grounded and vulnerable performance in the romantic drama series Normal People. Based on the 2018 novel of the same name by Sally Rooney, Normal People follows the relationship between Marianne and Connell as they navigate adulthood, with Edgar-Jones being nominated for all manner of awards including a Golden Globe and a Critics’ Choice Television Award.

Sebastian Stan is best known for his role as Bucky, AKA The Winter Soldier in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with the duo of Edgar-Jones and Stan sure to result in a pair of powerful performances within Fresh’s bizarre rom-com-horror approach.

Fresh is scheduled to be released on March 4, 2022 on Hulu by Searchlight Pictures. The movie is a co-production between Legendary Pictures and Hyperobject Industries; Adam McKay produced the film alongside Kevin J. Messick and Maeve Cullinane.
