Maverick Share Top Spot at Box Office as Both Films Draw $30.5 Million

Warner Bros. and Paramount are calling it at $30.5 for the weekend for Elvis and Top Gun: Maverick, making it a rare tie at the top of the box office.

Warner Bros.

Joseph Kosinski’s Top Gun: Maverick and Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis are both the kings of the box office for this weekend. The two movies had been deadlocked for the No. 1 spot with both films earning $30.5 domestically in the United States and Canada. This will put the two movies at a rare tie, though it can still be seen as a big win for Maverick. The Top Gun sequel marks a return to the top of the box office with its fifth weekend in theaters, which is another uncommon occurrence, while Elvis was making its debut.

Domestically, Top Gun: Maverick is now up to $521.7 million pulled in since premiering in theaters five weeks ago. Internationally, it has drawn $484.7 million, putting its worldwide haul to $1.006 billion. That also makes the movie the highest-grossing film of 2022, putting it above Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. It is also the highest-grossing movie of Tom Cruise’s career. Word of mouth and positive reviews may be contributing to continued success at theaters for the Top Gun sequel.

Elvis can also be seen as a success as it has performed higher than its projections, which had estimated a haul of $28-30 million. Those aren’t bad numbers as the film does come to theaters at a time when it has to compete with movies like Top Gun: Maverick and Jurassic World Dominion, summer blockbusters that are best enjoyed on the big screen. Reviews have been especially kind to Austin Butler’s performance as the king of rock ‘n roll and more filmgoers than expected wanted to see the actor bring the late singer to life.

Lightyear Drops After Underperforming

Jurassic World Dominion fell from the top spot to No. 3 with the introduction of Elvis and Top Gun: Maverick swooping back in. That film earned $26.4 million, continuing its own great success despite negative reviews from critics. This was followed by the debuting horror movie The Black Phone which opened with $23.3 million, higher than expected for the A24 feature.

Meanwhile, Lightyear rounds out the top five after falling in ticket sales by 65% from its opening weekend. That’s certainly not a good sign for the movie moving forward, especially as it opened below expectations. Toy Story movies are traditionally big hitters at the box office, but the risky route of developing a spinoff about Buzz Lightyear that isn’t the same Buzz that fans had already spent four films investing in doesn’t seem to have paid off.
