Cobra Kai Season 6 Might Be Delayed, Creators Say

It appears fans will have to wait a little longer for Cobra Kai season 6. The acclaimed Karate Kid spinoff premiered on YouTube Red in 2018 before shifting base to Netflix from season three onwards. And now, five seasons in, Cobra Kai is still not showing any signs of slowing down and continues to get better.

Cobra Kai season 5 premiered on Netflix earlier this month and immediately claimed the top spot in the streamer’s weekly most-watched titles rankings. However, Netflix has yet to renew Cobra Kai for a sixth season.

Cobra Kai creators Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg are currently busy with Obliterated, a high-octane action-comedy series from Netflix and Sony. Production is underway on Obliterated right now, and the show marks the trio’s return to the unfiltered, R-rated comedy genre, along the lines of their earlier works like the Harold and Kumar films and American Reunion.

Heald, Hurwitz, and Schlossberg are also working on a Ferris Bueller’s Day Off spinoff and a Duke Nukem movie. However, the trio promises that once they wrap up Obliterated, Cobra Kai season 6 will be next if it gets renewed of course, which let’s agree, is going to happen sooner or later. There’s no chance Netflix is canceling Cobra Kai as well. Here’s what Jon Hurwitz told Deadline recently:

“We’re still working all that out with Sony and Netflix, and we don’t have an official Season 6 to announce yet. What we can say is that we’re constantly thinking about these characters. We are working on Obliterated right now for Sony and Netflix. We’re in our second month of production on that, and I think it’s going to blow people’s minds. But we’re hopeful that there’s going to be more Cobra Kai on the horizon. There may be a little bit more of a wait, potentially, just because we are in the midst of working on that other show, but it won’t be far behind, assuming everything goes as we’re expecting.”

What Can We Expect From Cobra Kai Season 6?

Netflix

Cobra Kai began as a starring vehicle for William Zabka, who reprised his role as The Karate Kid antagonist, Johnny Lawrence. The show continued Lawrence’s rivalry with Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) while also sparking off new ones between the younger generation: Miguel Diaz (Xolo Maridueña) & Robby Keene (Tanner Buchanan) and Sam LaRusso (Mary Mouser) & Tory Nichols (Peyton List).

Most of the long-running rivalries have been settled as of Cobra Kai season 5, but not everything will go back to normal in the valley so easily with the series’ big bad John Kreese (Martin Kove) still lurking out there. Season 5 also teased a global karate tournament, so perhaps we’ll see some international villains next time. Unfortunately, Heald, Hurwitz, and Schlossberg are keeping things close to their chest and have refused to divulge any information about where the series will go next, except that it will be bigger and more melodramatic. Hopefully, Cobra Kai season 6 won’t take long to arrive.

In the meantime, Sony is looking to expand the Karate Kid franchise with a theatrical movie set to premiere in 2024. The currently untitled film doesn’t involve the Cobra Kai team and is completely unrelated to the characters as well. Let’s hope it will at least be set in the same universe rather than be a reboot like 2010’s The Karate Kid, starring Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan.
