Emma Stone ‘Would Love’ to Use Her Real Name, but There is One Simple Reason Why She Can’t

Summary

  • Call her Emily: Emma Stone reveals her real name due to complicated SAG regulations in Hollywood.
  • The Curse critiques satirical elements but wins praise for cringe comedy style from critics.
  • Season 2 of The Curse might bring back deceased character Asher, hinting at more bizarre storylines.

The name is Stone, but it’s not Emma Stone. Well, it is, but the Oscar-winning actress revealed in a new interview that she was forced to adopt her stage name as her real name was “taken” by another actress who joined the SAG-AFTRA before her. For this reason, she urges everyone to call her by her real name at every opportunity, even if those movie posters will always have Emma Stone printed on them.

In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter alongside her The Curse co-star Nathan Fielder, the actress shared the unexpected gripe that she has with her Hollywood moniker. So who is Emma Stone really? During the interview, it was actually Fielder who brought up the subject, noting that he would be calling Stone by her real name throughout the chat.

“Before we continue, I’d like to say something.
Her name’s Emily
, but she goes by Emma professionally. So when there’s people that don’t know her, I end up saying Emma. But I’m going to just say Emily from here on.”

Stone explained that she often urges people who work with her to call her by her real name, and would much prefer to be known as Emily by everyone. She said:

“When I get to know them, people that I work with do. It’s just because my name was taken [by another actress in SAG]. Then I freaked out a couple of years ago. For some reason, I was like, ‘I can’t do it anymore. Just call me Emily.’ Nathan calls me Em, which is easier.”

Emma Stone is Hoping for Emmy Success with The Curse – and Season 2

The Curse debuted in November 2023 as a joint venture between Showtime, Paramount+ and the increasingly impressive A24. Described as a “genre-bending” tale of an alleged curse that threatens to destroy the marriage of a couple who also co-host their own home improvement reality TV show, the series scored very highly with critics, but did not do so well with audiences.

The satirical nature of the series appeared to be the biggest stumbling block when it came to audiences either getting the joke or not. Many of the lowest scoring reviews slammed it as boring and pathetic, while the highest ratings made specific note that was part of the point. Many praised Stone and Fielder’s ability to portray “cringe comedy” in a way that it became “so awkward it goes beyond being funny and just leaves you praying for it to end.”

Studio Showtime, A24

Creator Nathan Fielder, Benny Safdie

The ending of The Curse, which saw Fielder’s character of Asher ending up dead in space after floating away for an unknown reason and Stone’s Whitney celebrating the birth of their child in hospital, seemed to bring the absurd show to a close. However, in their interview, the pair suggested that it may not be the end of the story, and Season 2 could still be on the cards. When asked whether the show could return, they said:

FIELDER

: “Well, right now we’re all doing other things. But I think —”

STONE

: “There could be.”

FIELDER

: “There definitely could be. From the start, we had it mapped out beyond the first season.”

Although Fielder was asked whether his character – now deceased – would be involved in that potential new season, he said:

I don’t want to spoil it.

So for those who did like the often bizarre, toe-curling experience that made The Curse so divisive, it may not be over just yet. Exactly how the series would manage to see Fielding’s character return from his death in space is something fans can only ponder on until a decision about the show’s continuation is revealed.
