As Taylor Sheridan continues to be the most prolific TV scribe in 2025, his underrated TV series The Last Cowboy is such a refreshing change of pace that it deserves a watch from his most dedicated fans and followers. Rather than a scripted drama about hardscrabble cowboys and frontiersmen, the show adopts a fun reality competition formula to see who will emerge as the most talented horse reining rider. With a million-dollar prize up for grabs, there’s no room for horsing around.
Although The Last Cowboy Season 5 concluded in December 2024, Paramount+, the streaming network Sheridan has called his creative home since Yellowstone, will add the show to its lineup in June. Considering how popular the streamer’s flagship drama and its various spinoffs remain, as well as other hits like Landman and Tulsa King, The Last Cowboy has been severely overlooked in comparison to Sheridan’s most famous TV shows. Until a Season 6 cancellation or renewal is announced, it’s time to catch up on The Last Cowboy’s first five seasons.
Taylor Sheridan’s Upcoming Movie and TV Slate
Paramount Network
Upon penning a handful of terrific movie scripts between 2015 and 2021, Taylor Sheridan inked a deal with Paramount+ to write several TV shows. Sheridan began his pact with the streamer by launching Yellowstone, a hit neo-western soap opera that spawned multiple spinoffs. The spinoffs that have already aired include 1883 and 1923.
Sheridan plays Travis Wheatley in Yellowstone, a horse reining expert who competes in the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA). With a genuine passion for reining, those who enjoyed Wheatley in Yellowstone will get a real kick out of The Last Cowboy.
Those yet to air include 1944, 6666, The Madison, an untitled Beth and Rip Wheeler spinoff, and Y: Marshals, which concerns Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) joining the U.S. Marshals. Outside the ever-expanding Yellowstone universe, Sheridan has created several scripted dramas for Paramount+, including The Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King, Special Ops: Lioness, and most recently, the hit oilfield drama Landman.

What Is ‘The Last Cowboy’ About?
CMT
Sheridan and Paramount+ launched the reality competition docuseries The Last Cowboy in 2019. Each season includes six episodes that follow 16 supremely skilled horse riders competing in the Cactus Classic for a chance to enter the Run For A Million invitational. The winner is awarded $1 million, the largest prize in the history of horse training and riding.
As Sheridan told Bridle & Bit in 2024 about the show’s intentions:
“Part of that is, I had the idea to film a non-scripted tv show that would showcase the event, the horses and riders. We would film this show during competitions all season long, and then culminate with The Run For A Million competition. Each season of The Last Cowboy TV show gets better and better, just like the live event. It is exciting to watch and is a real hit. We show the World how cool all of this is. It is available to watch on cable, or stream on Paramount+ and CMT.”
Spotlighting a subculture rarely depicted on TV, The Last Cowboy provides an enthralling glimpse behind the scenes of everything from horse training and reining to riding, cutting, and cow horsing.

Every TV Series Coming to Paramount+ in June 2025
There are a few exciting shows making their way to Paramount+ in June.
Sheridan has made a name for authentic Old West storytelling and exploration of westward expansion mythology. The Last Cowboy adopts a much different formula, but it retains the spirit of adoration for equine culture. Those who enjoy seeing the horseplay and exhilarating rodeos in Yellowstone will be stunned by how dangerous and dedicated the competitors are.
While popular enough to air on the Country Music Television (CMT) channel, The Last Cowboy remains incredibly underrated. Most people, Sheridan diehards included, are unaware that it exists. No Metascore, Wikipedia page, or Rotten Tomatoes ratings exist for the show, and only nine IMDb users have reviewed it. Moreover, because it’s a non-scripted reality TV competition that drastically differs from his fictional dramas, the show has flown under the radar of Sheridan fans.
Why You Need To Watch ‘The Last Cowboy’ ASAP
CMT
Sheridan fans who revel and relish in the cowboy way of life he espouses on TV will get a dose of the real deal in The Last Cowboy. Whether a casual or hardcore equine enthusiast, the show entertains and educates about what it takes to be a top horse reining competitor. Reining involves maneuvering a horse to perform spins, circles, slides, stops, and more; skills required for cowboys to handle cattle while ranching.
Beyond learning the ropes of the trade, the underrated Sheridan show allows viewers to understand the immense physical and mental dedication required by the contestants, what drives them as competitors, the toll it takes on their personal lives, and where their professional lives go after their ultimate Las Vegas showdown. New challenges are added each year, with a recent wrinkle including the Bareback Buck Out Invitational.
As one of the only reality shows offering an authentic glimpse into this specific subset of horse riders, the refreshing originality is hard to beat. Sheridan spoke about the show’s mission, telling Bridle & Bit:
“During the first season of ‘Yellowstone,’ I did a scene that included NRHA [National Reining Horse Association] riders. When I was talking to these guys about the industry, there was some discussion about the current state of the industry and how it could improve. I thought about it and started work on creating an event that would showcase and elevate the western performance genre.”
Apart from elevating the western performance genre, another reason to watch The Last Cowboy is how easily it accommodates binge-watching. With only 30 episodes produced between 2019 and 2025, the six-episode seasons (41-minute episodes) make for an effortlessly convenient watch that can be completed quickly. Although Paramount has yet to renew The Last Cowboy for a sixth season, Sheridan has expressed excitement for the future, adding:
“We work to make each year better and better, with so many new things to do, that you will have something to do every minute that you are there. We also have continued with a focus on having the best of the best in the western performance genre competing and concerts with talent like Lainey Wilson live at the South Point Showroom.”
If Season 5 was The Last Cowboy’s final rodeo, Sheridan fans should round up the show and give it a go. Stream The Last Cowboy on Paramount+, with Season 5 joining the platform on June 25.
